About Chuck Smith
Chuck Smith is a local attorney. He's practiced law for more than thirty years, representing plaintiffs and defendants, both civil and criminal, in Federal and State Courts. His primary practice areas are Bankruptcy, Criminal, Divorce, Immigration, and Military Law.
A former Marine (0311) and U.S. Navy JAG Officer (Retired), Chuck is married with five children. He has lived in
Virginia for the last three decades, in
Roanoke,
Norfolk and
Virginia Beach. While in
Roanoke, Chuck served on the Board of Directors of the Roanoke Bar Association. He is active in his community, and has served on the Board of Directors for the Campus East Community Association.
Born on the 4th of July, in 1952, Chuck Smith was raised by his grandmother in the projects of
Greensboro,
North Carolina. With little to give him except unfailing love and abiding faith, she never let him forget that sharing a birthday with this great nation was a special gift, instilling in Chuck a strong sense of American pride. It is this sense of greater responsibility that has driven Chuck throughout his life to soar to higher heights. At seventeen years of age, with the Vietnam War still raging, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Chuck wanted to serve his country, and he wanted to do so by serving in the most difficult Marine Corps Division, the Infantry. Chuck proudly answered his call to duty as an 0311 Marine, and continued to serve both active and inactive duty for six years.
Just four days after being released from Marine Corps active duty, Chuck applied to, and was accepted at, the
North Carolina
Central
University, where he graduated in just six years with two degrees, a B.A. in Political Science, and a J.D. in Law. Still determined to honor, defend, and serve his country, Chuck earned his certification in Military Science from the
Naval
Justice
School, after having received a commission in the U.S. Navy JAG Corps, where he served both active and reserve duty for twenty more years until his retirement in 2008. While with the Navy JAG Corps, Chuck served as a prosecutor, defense counsel, administrative discharge officer, and held the prestigious position of Special Assistant United States Attorney. Chuck is fluent in Spanish, and has studied law at the well-regarded La Facultad de Derecho, Universidad de Costa Rica at
San Jose, and was accepted by ICFES for law study in
Bogota,
Colombia . His military service has taken him around the world, from
Guantanamo
Bay to Okinawa, but Chuck has made his home in
Virginia.
From the projects of
Greensboro to the streets of
Philadelphia, from the training grounds of Parris Island to the courtrooms of
Virginia, Chuck Smith has been an ardent defender of American values. His campaign focus, Principle above Politics, reflects his continuing sense of duty, and his determination to bring honest representation to the people of
Virginia.
